  • Some courses of action seem obvious to me and so I'm baffled as to what the roadblocks are.

Today, I'll pick just one.   Why alcoholics can buy booze.   I have 7 friends and acquaintances who are alcoholics, 4 "recovered" and 3 definitely not.  One of the recovereds introduced me to 2 other recovereds.

One of the sick ones is a distant relative who was arrested a half-dozen times for drunk driving.   His last arrest was in a county where they have a  treatment facility.   And the judge ordered him to treatment.  I wasn't aware that counties have such differing standards of taking care of drunk drivers.

Meanwhile, about the recovered ones.    They have strong hearts and strong family.   My friend TR knew he was alcoholic when in college.   After about 8 years of treatment, he went on the wagon for good.

  • 12/24/09--19:35: A Philosopher's Bank (chan 1510989)
  • Greetings to all,

Before I became interested in psychology and philosophy, I grew up on a small quiet farm.  Pasture, marsh, woods, fields and gardens.  Above us, robins, Canadian geese, egrets, hawks, swallows, blue jays.  On the ground, grass snakes, raccoons, skunks, groundhogs, mice and the occasional fox.   Connecting the two were the trees.   I spent a lot of time climbing trees.  My favorites were the Siberian elms, boxelders and oaks, plus the apple trees in the autumn.

These experiences in nature were the first tangible foundations of what I consider important.

I was puzzled that other people did not take treeplanting as seriously as I did.   Over the years, I became increasingly irritated that farmland and urban areas were valued at the expense of wild lands.

  • 03/01/10--17:38: Being ready to get a job (chan 1510989)
  • I'm the kind of person who sees small business opportunities.   (So far, I've started 2 small businesses.   Neither have broken even yet.)

I'm always on the look out for people who have skills that the business ideas need.

I've noticed that a great many people on DKos don't put their email address or other contact info.   I can't give you a job if I don't have a way to contact you.   That should be a hint of the day for many jobseekers.
